Spotlight on Powell County, home of Natural Bridge State Park

Somewhere around 1940, county road inventories were conducted by request of the United States Congress.  Powell County, Kentucky happened to list Sand Lick Road #57 on this official county road inventory and its beauty and inspiration drew overlanders from all across the nation for decades.  This road was obliterated in 2006 by the US forest service using state funds from the Kentucky Land Heritage Conservation Fund, derived from "nature license plate" sales.  All the other roads are open on the map and reopening Sand Lick Road in its entirety is the goal of the county and public who are aware of the illegal closures.  Note: the broken double lines represent county roads, the single line county trails.

This map shows all the byways, please get out and enjoy this piece of cultural heritage of Powell County Kentucky.  More to follow...

  2. You can see it in the Library of Congress, the Archives at Frankfort, or via the call number at the University of Kentucky's Reserves Library 625.7k4183. The map is online at http://www.uky.edu/maps/ghm1950/powell.tif and the counties do have these maps as well. The Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway master map is in development presently and will be shared ASAP online and locally in the region.
